1) Parlor coffee and devotional. Mother’s Bible opened to Psalm 88, which includes this verse: “Friends and neighbors thou hast put far from me, and mine acquaintances thou hast kept away from me.” How very appropriate for the pandemic.
2) No one has done any significant gardening or yard work this summer, and it appears we have nearly a field of some weed with wooly-looking lavender caterpillars on it growing beside the house and in back, spiked here and there with china asters. I can’t decide if I like it or not.
2a) That said, it is astonishing the height and tenacity to which a weed can grow. A week or so ago I vigorously ripped out a stand of weeds just over half my height near the front of the house. I won, but it was a battle!
3) The stack of unread books in my parlor has grown by two. In P’town last week I picked up Jet Set: The People, the Planes, the Glamour, and the Romance of Aviation’s Glory Years, by William Stadiem. This week H sent me a new novel for my birthday, The Fortnight in September, by R.C. Sherriff.
